my “summer 16” sneaker obsession

PUma

:: the puma creeper– sold out, but still on my wish list ::

for some reason, when I think of summer, I think of new sneakers. it’s definitely reminiscent of my childhood. my parents always bought me new sneakers for summer, and it’s so crazy that 20 years later I can still find happiness in a simple childhood memory!

hopefully, I can put away my winter coat… and break out a fresh pair of sneaks soon. OUT with my winter booties, its time to change it up. as I wait for the weather to clear up, you continue reading, to see all my “summer 16” sneaker obsessions:

SHU UEMURA essence absolue nourishing body oil: promoted to nourish dry skin… I don’t know about that, but the smell alone has me hooked. my go to product for sun bathing, leaves me glowing every time.

AVEDA be curly intensive detangling masque: Ever since AVEDA discontinued their BEST product (elixir) for curly hair, I’ve been waiting for the release of the next greatest thing. finally, the wait is over. the be curly masque softens, and detangles, leaving curls perfect. I rarely wear my hair curly, mainly because its too short, but this product might have your girl rockin curls a little more before summer is over.

becurly

I know, I know, I should have told you about these earlier, sorry. but, you still have time to give them a try. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

do you have any summer products you’re not happy to give up?

xoxo… to the weekend at coney island!

me: babe, what is this movie you’re watching?

bae: uhmmm, the warriors! you’ve never seen this movie?

me: nope… what is it about?

and that was the conversation that led to a day trip to far ass coney island. honestly, I’ve always wanted to visit CI, but never had the chance, patience, or someone to tag along. I must say, I had a great time.

So, please enjoy my picture set, and some quotes from the movie, the warriors.

díner en blanc… philly

thursday, august 20th

navy yard, philadelphia

a 25 minute walk, all white. table on my back, chairs on cort’s arms. pulling a wagon filled with food. to a secret location. ohhh, and let’s not forget the scattered thunderstorms… on this day, this was the norm for over 4000 people.

a pop up dinner, at a secret location, where everyone is dressed in white. le díner en blanc is a 27 year old tradition, started in paris. in the beginning, this magical night used word of mouth only to gain attendees. today there are 30,000+ people on the wait list. today prospects rely on social media to find an “in” to this once a year chic picnic.

3 things that went WRONG on the day of díner en blanc;

my experience:

at first glance, seeing pictures on social media of this event where hundreds of people are all dressed in white is beautiful. immediately, I wanted to attend the next event. but, what I didn’t know was the process. I’m still unsure of how to obtain tickets other than your name being drawn in a lottery. after the bff told me we had been chosen, i was so excited. until the next day, when we received an email from Tracy the “table leader” explaining how things work. after reading the email… the game changed. you have to bring everything… literally everything. a table, chairs, place setting, food, table props, champagne, wine. uhmm wtf? the bff estimated that we spent $500 on this night. “bish where?”

first, we met up with our group (table mates) and then walked to a surprise destination. so, for us, it was a 25 minute walk, in the rain, in 80 degree weather, plastic ponchos sticking to our skin, and sweating out our hair. but, when we strolled up to the navy yard, it all seemed worth the trouble.

thousands of people lugging tables and chairs, pile into the navy yard, and begin to setup their tables. out comes the tablecloths, fine china, candelabras, wine glasses, champagne flutes, fresh flowers… I mean the works. but remember, it’s still raining. I look around, everyone seems to be content with the rain. ok, then I’ll act like its a beautiful spring day too.

everyone begins to wave their white cloth napkins in the air, a sign that all tables are set up, and dinner can begin. but don’t forget… it’s STILL raining, and the bff realized she lost her phone, so she is O.V.E.R. it. however… the show must go on. pour a glass of wine and worry about it in the morning.

after the 2nd glass of wine is when we gave in to the rain. at that point the only problem I had with the rain was how it diluted my wine. so what, we have on white dresses and it’s pouring, so what, the rain and humidity turned our hair into afros. so whattttt, we ran around barefoot on wet grass and dirt. after we stopped complaining, and LIVED LIFE… we understood how magical díner en blanc is.

and then… the rain stopped!

contouring 101

one makeup technique that I have to learn and master before the summer is out is contouring. For the most part applying makeup comes naturally, but for some reason, my inner drag queen skills will not reveal themselves when it comes to contouring. So, enough clown face, and an overly contoured forehead. I’m now seeking the help of well known NYC based makeup artist, Tedrick Lamar.

photo 1

• so what’s his key to success you wonder? •

first, understand the different types of contouring, and what works for you. day time vs. night time makeup application. also, understanding the product you should use depending on your skin type. And remember, it’s easier to add than subtract. so, start small.

photo 2

small contour brush & angled brush is needed

• how do I know what shades of foundation/concealer to use? •

use 2 shades of foundation. one a shade lighter, for highlighting, and the other for contouring, 3 -4 shades darker.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Contouring Kit… my new best friend.

• But really, is contouring even for me? •

anyone can contour. the key is knowing your face shape. everyone has different needs, and understanding  your needs will make the process easier. before you start, use your fingers to feel for the hollow areas of your face, don’t be shy, get to know your bone structure.

• what about the beauty blender, it’s my favorite makeup applying tool? •

I love the beauty blender, it’s the easiest and best tool to use. I can paint an entire face with just the beauty blender if I wanted to.

contouring for beginners can be a little stressful, but practice is always the key. after a contouring workshop with tedrick, I feel confident as well as educated. below are 3 tricks I learned:

• beauty blenders are a gift from God (my next project will be learning more about the founders)

• start with small amounts of makeup and work your way to heavier amounts

• get to know your face, and know what works best for you

• practice makes perfect

francie & sandy– the beautiful brides

love is a beautiful thing. it’s a feeling that completely takes over my life. I love strong, and believe everyone has a soulmate, and will one day find their better half. So, in the name of LOVE, I joined Francie and Sandy in Dominican Republic to celebrate their union.

to keep it sweet & short… everything was amazing. the casa coloniel hotel was absolutely beautiful, with the most gracious employees, and delicious food. I just can’t get enough of this place.

a funny story:

the day of the wedding, I had this hiccup in my flight arrangement. So instead of arriving to DR around 11am, I arrived at 4pm, 1 hour before the wedding. Needless to say I was running on fumes. cocktail after cocktail, shots of brugal, on top of dancing for hours in 85 degree weather had a sister bent. but, I wanted to take pictures of the wedding, and my phone was dying. so, I went to my hotel room to charge my phone for a little while. next thing I know, I wake up to my friends banging on the door because they thought I ran off with a Dominican Man… lmao, WTF? don’t they know bear would kill me.

poolside at casa coloniel- dominican republic

I spent a few days in the dominican republic, to witness a beautiful union (stay tuned for TGC’s #fswedding post later this week).

All I wanted to do on my free time was get a tan, drink mamajuana, and eat everything in sight. which I did, but I also managed to work in some fun sight seeing.

A quick background story about my DR trip… I booked a flight to the wrong airport, Punta Cana. I should have been flying into Puerto Plata, which is 8 hours away by car. but, if you know me, you know sometimes my little brain is a trip. And I’ve learned things just work out, or you make them work out. so, after crying my little heart out, (I’m a crybaby) the Delta rebooking agent (HUGE HUGE HUGE shout out to Tracy at JFK airport) put me on a flight, first class to a closer airport, which was an hour and a half away. So, I made it.

but, if I didn’t make it, baby girl would have had a solo trip to Punta Cana!

2 great brooklyn restaurants

cooklyn.

minimalistic bar

hanging with the bff, we have the strangest way of making decisions. “Oh, I’ve never been to this restaurant, but the name is cool, let’s go.” And, that’s how we ended up at COOKLYN. Good thing the food and service was amazing. We normally frequent the same ol neighborhood restaurant, but I’m so happy we ventured out, especially since this was kind of a late birthday dinner for bae.

great wine, great food, and even better service… you must try this place. I don’t know if it matters to you, but I’m a weirdo, and I loved that the entire staff was good looking. I’ll be back to try the lobster mac and cheese, and the duck duck cous!

DOPE... the movie at BAM

DOPE… the movie at BAM

A must see… hilarious, true, and epic. Yes, I drank half a bottle of wine before attending, so I may have laughed a little harder and louder than usual, but this movie was greatness. The story of a 90’s music fan/ high school geek who gets caught up in local drug activity is genius. The events that took place in this movie, aren’t far from reality. Growing up in West Philadelphia, being bussed off to school everyday, many times carrying a violin case did not make me blind to what was going on in my neighborhood. So the storyline of DOPE, definitely hit a few soft spots for me.

me and the bff… having a photoshoot!

I mean… how cool is this? celeste runs a lemonade stand on the corner of her block. and guess what all the money she makes goes towards… her college fund. I am an advocate for higher education, but the way college tuition is set up, I hope my children are 12 year old entrepreneurs like celeste.

fresh squeezed lemonade.

GAY PRIDE… front seat view

my favorite day in NYC is GAY PRIDE. the main reason, because everyone is HAPPY. homophobes know to jet off to the Hamptons or wherever they go to hide, and the city comes alive. Everyone is laughing with one another, meeting new people, walking around topless, openly being affectionate, and I love every minute of it.

what is “astroglide?”

21st and 5th… ALL LOVE!

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend, filled with LOVE, FOOD, and GREAT FRIENDS!
