happyyyyy new year ya’ll… did ya miss me?! well, I missed you & I hope you had an amazing holiday season. i spent Christmas in philly with my future baby daddy and family. although LC (little chris AKA my baby daddy) has met my entire family before, this was his first time spending a major holiday with them. my family is SUPER chill when it comes to holiday’s so it was definitely a change for him. not to mention this was the first time he’s been away from his family on Christmas. LC is a sweet heart, for real.

anyway…  I want to start the new year off by publishing an over due post. for the past 8+ months, I’ve been wearing my hair wavy and I am completely OBSESSED. many of you comment on Instagram and Snapchat asking how I do my hair. I always say it’s super easy and I’ll do a tutorial… but I’ve just been super lazy. don’t judge me. just watch the video below, and don’t burn off your hair.

kate lynn & adwoa products

there was a time I thought attending an HBCU was the ultimate black cultural experience. but then… I moved to brooklyn, and my life has forever changed. all I ever want to eat is jerk chicken, rice & peas, and beef patties. if I don’t hear at least 2 soca songs on a saturday night out, then I’ll throw a fit. I ditched nivea, lubriderm, and dove soap for pure shea butter, dr. bronner’s and black soap. girl, listen… these hips are wider than ever, but my skin is clear and glowing… and I’m happy with all dat. oh… and I’m celebrating kwanzaa this year!

I’m always on a mission to try new products and brands, and this summer I discovered a new  skin care line, kate lynn & adwoa. I met the owner, Davida, a few years back at a women’s empowerment dinner in Atlanta, hosted by my amazing friend Jesse Mills. so, when I learned of the new business venture, I had to support.

I originally was only going to purchase a few bars of black soap, but then found  the coffee body scrub and ordered that as well. coffee seems to be all the “RAVE” right now, but its always been an amazing addition to beauty products more specifically body scrubs, and here’s why:

my “summer 16” sneaker obsession

PUma

:: the puma creeper– sold out, but still on my wish list ::

for some reason, when I think of summer, I think of new sneakers. it’s definitely reminiscent of my childhood. my parents always bought me new sneakers for summer, and it’s so crazy that 20 years later I can still find happiness in a simple childhood memory!

hopefully, I can put away my winter coat… and break out a fresh pair of sneaks soon. OUT with my winter booties, its time to change it up. as I wait for the weather to clear up, you continue reading, to see all my “summer 16” sneaker obsessions:

my top WINTER moisturizer’s…

IMG_0949

although this winter hasn’t been as brutal as past winter’s, it is still necessary to treat your skin properly. during winter months, I NEED a moisturizer that will withstand the elements. here are my go to winter moisturizer’s:

1. shea moisture: olive and green tea body butter

so, within the past 6 months, I’ve become OBSESSED with shea moisture products. I feel it’s one of the top brands that performs. I use multiple products from this brand ranging in hair care, soap, shampoo, and moisturizers and I love them all.

the body butter is thick and creamy, and is truly moisturizing. I’ll normally apply in the morning, and 12 hours later… baby girl is still shining. (sidenote: during winter months, my skin gets extremely dry. if I moisturize before bed, by morning my skin is dry and flakey.)

2. sol de janeiro: bum bum cream

pronounced “boom- boom,” this cream is da shit. made with guaraná, an extract native to Brazil. the product smoothes and tightens the skin, ideally to be used on your BUM BUM. but this product is so great, that I use it on my entire body. also made with cupuaçu butter, which locks in moisture making this product a great winter moisturizer. oh, and the smell is amazing.

3. shea moisture: extra virgin coconut oil

this product stays in rotation all year round.

not only is this an amazing hydrating skin product, it’s also great for removing makeup, adding shine to the hair, as well as decreasing frizz.

4. aveda: tourmaline charged hydrating creme (facial moisturizer)

there are a few aveda products that I swear by, one being their tourmaline hydrating creme. I’ve been using this face moisturizer for over 6 years, and have found no other product that produces the same results. i love to exfoliate (which you should do at least twice a week), and then drench my skin in the tourmaline creme. It keeps my skin smooth and moisturized. (side note: product pictured above is NOT the retail size of the product. I have friends in high places who supply me with “salon only” product sizes.)

** not listed, but another product I swear by is aquaphor… all I am going to say about that is “get you some.”

new year… “new YOU?”

ig post

I came across this post on Instagram the other day, and it literally spoke to me. I am normally a huge fan of the new year, and being a “better you,”  but for some reason, this new year hasn’t put any fire under my ass.

so, let’s just call February the start of the new year. I have a few goals set in place, which I did kick off in January, but in February, I plan to be 100% committed. check out a few of my goals listed below:

SAVING:

honestly, saving money has always been a struggle for me. I’ve never been taught  how to spend and save money wisely. I’ve always spent every coin I’ve earned. sometimes on items that are frivolous, and some items that last a lifetime. but, either way, as this old age creeps up, I’ve decided to get serious about my finances. so, I recently joined a savings challenge with my close friends with the help of financial educator, Tiffany Aliche. tiffany created the live richer challenge, and in 22 days, I’ve learned so many helpful tips that have changed my outlook on money and saving.

THE BLOG:

the blizoggg is on and poppin in 2016. I took a break the last few months of 2015, but I had so much going on. but I’m back, and will be dedicating more time and love to my blog, and readers. I appreciate the notes, and constant visits to the blog while I was away on vacation, and if it wasn’t for your kind words, I would have taken another month off. so, thank you, thank you, thank you for your encouragement, and continued support… 2016, LET’S GOOOOO!

HEALTH:

let’s go back, say… 3 years. With the exception of high school, that was the best, and happiest I’ve been with my body. not only was I happy with my body shape, but also my health and fitness overall. 3 years ago, I moved to NYC, started doing yoga 4 times a week, and was serious about my paleo lifestyle. somewhere along the line, i got hooked on cheeseburgers, empanadas, mac & cheese, crown royal, and everything in between. now that’s a hard habit to kick. so, I’m going back to what makes me happy, and ultimately what works. so, I signed up to YogaGlo, which offers online yoga classes. for the month of February, I will be joining the Fit Girls Challenge with my friends, join the challenge… it’s free!

I hope everyone is having an amazing New Year, remember to work hard for the goals you want to achieve. by the way, what are some goals you wish to achieve this year?!

are you excited about balmain x h&m… or nah?

balmain

hell yeah I’m excited for this collab, but for some strange reason, every time I get excited, I immediately think about that episode of love and hip hop LA, when Malaysia joins the the group of ladies for dinner, dressed in head to toe alexander wang x h&m. Draya made a comment about Malaysia’s outfit, “… and you look like h&m.” uhmmm SHADE. like damn Draya, you got us bargain shoppers feeling some kind of way. So yeah, now I’m a little hesitant about the whole situation. I know, silly, but whatever.

the entire balmain x h&m collection is amazing. priced at $99- $649 I haven’t saved as many coins as I need for the best items, but I found a few piece’s that are in my budget, sorta.

see the full collection here

MY MUST HAVE PIECE, $149

so listen, remember the alexander wang x h&m collab? i was so caught up on the idea that because of the hype, h&m would be a mad house… FALSE. I guess because there is an h&m on every corner in NYC, there was more order and control than I expected. so here are some of my personal tips if you’re trying to score even a scarf from this collection:

EARLY ARRIVAL is key. arriving to an h&m location at 10 am is unacceptable. arrive around 7am.

DO NOT try and shop online, the website will crash.

BE PREPARED to only be allowed to purchase 2-3 items at a time

so what are your thoughts? are you excited about the collection… or nah?

herb fried chicken

I don’t fry chicken often…scratch that, I never fry chicken. It’s not because I don’t enjoy it (I do) it’s mainly because I’ve never been able to perfect it the way many of the women in my family have. I guess that’s setting quite a high standard since they’ve had so many years of practicing but I like to aim high in my endeavors. but when my friend Tisa requests fried chicken, fried chicken it is – she’s the only person I’d do this for; especially given the fact that I have a not so well-ventilated kitchen so I’m pretty sure the house smelled like chicken for days. oh well. In my version of fried chicken, I used chicken tenders primarily because it’s easy and most of the time I’m hungry when I’m cooking and have no time to waste. Enjoy!

for the brine:

chicken tenders (I used 8 tenders)

buttermilk

sriracha

for the chicken:

1 cup of flour

1 tsp salt (don’t be shy with the salt)

1 tsp. black pepper

1.5 tsp. herbs de Provence*

lemon zest

vegetable oil

*Herbs de Provence is an herb mixture that you should be able to find prepackaged in your local grocery store. It is typically a mixture of: marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano and lavender.

in a large bowl, add the chicken tenders then pour in buttermilk and a few dashes of sriracha. This is your brine for the chicken. if you can, allow the chicken to at least sit for 30 minutes longer if you can. for this recipe I did an hour and a half. if sriracha isn’t your thing, any hot sauce will do.

in a shallow dish, season with flour with salt, pepper, herbs de Provence and lemon zest.

heat a decent amount of vegetable oil in a skillet. to test and see if your oil is hot, stick the handle of a wooden spoon in the oil. if it bubbles, the oil is ready.

the fun part: one by one, remove each chicken tender from the brine, dip in the flour, dip back into the buttermilk then flour again. it seems a little extra but it gives the chicken a little extra crispiness and it makes all the difference.

fry your tenders (or whatever pieces of meat you’re using) until the outside is crispy and golden.
