contouring 101

one makeup technique that I have to learn and master before the summer is out is contouring. For the most part applying makeup comes naturally, but for some reason, my inner drag queen skills will not reveal themselves when it comes to contouring. So, enough clown face, and an overly contoured forehead. I’m now seeking the help of well known NYC based makeup artist, Tedrick Lamar.

• so what’s his key to success you wonder? •

first, understand the different types of contouring, and what works for you. day time vs. night time makeup application. also, understanding the product you should use depending on your skin type. And remember, it’s easier to add than subtract. so, start small.

• how do I know what shades of foundation/concealer to use? •

use 2 shades of foundation. one a shade lighter, for highlighting, and the other for contouring, 3 -4 shades darker.

• But really, is contouring even for me? •

anyone can contour. the key is knowing your face shape. everyone has different needs, and understanding  your needs will make the process easier. before you start, use your fingers to feel for the hollow areas of your face, don’t be shy, get to know your bone structure.

• what about the beauty blender, it’s my favorite makeup applying tool? •

I love the beauty blender, it’s the easiest and best tool to use. I can paint an entire face with just the beauty blender if I wanted to.

contouring for beginners can be a little stressful, but practice is always the key. after a contouring workshop with tedrick, I feel confident as well as educated. below are 3 tricks I learned:

• beauty blenders are a gift from God (my next project will be learning more about the founders)

• start with small amounts of makeup and work your way to heavier amounts

• get to know your face, and know what works best for you

• practice makes perfect

I spent a few days in the dominican republic, to witness a beautiful union (stay tuned for TGC’s #fswedding post later this week).

All I wanted to do on my free time was get a tan, drink mamajuana, and eat everything in sight. which I did, but I also managed to work in some fun sight seeing.

A quick background story about my DR trip… I booked a flight to the wrong airport, Punta Cana. I should have been flying into Puerto Plata, which is 8 hours away by car. but, if you know me, you know sometimes my little brain is a trip. And I’ve learned things just work out, or you make them work out. so, after crying my little heart out, (I’m a crybaby) the Delta rebooking agent (HUGE HUGE HUGE shout out to Tracy at JFK airport) put me on a flight, first class to a closer airport, which was an hour and a half away. So, I made it.

but, if I didn’t make it, baby girl would have had a solo trip to Punta Cana!

2 great brooklyn restaurants

hanging with the bff, we have the strangest way of making decisions. “Oh, I’ve never been to this restaurant, but the name is cool, let’s go.” And, that’s how we ended up at COOKLYN. Good thing the food and service was amazing. We normally frequent the same ol neighborhood restaurant, but I’m so happy we ventured out, especially since this was kind of a late birthday dinner for bae.

great wine, great food, and even better service… you must try this place. I don’t know if it matters to you, but I’m a weirdo, and I loved that the entire staff was good looking. I’ll be back to try the lobster mac and cheese, and the duck duck cous!

3 days of lobster rolls

on my free time, I like to write yelp reviews. not those bougie posts that make you think you’re reading an article in bon appetit. I mean posts that are “REAL.” my posts have a little humor, the truth, and of course a little profanity. sorry. Follow this link to my yelp page, and enjoy full reviews of all of the restaurants listed below and more.

It’s been a great summer so far, I discovered my love for lobster rolls and It has taken over my life. So, for the love of blogging, I’ve decided to roam the streets of New York to find my favorite lobster roll.

First up… burger & lobster!

burger & lobster

with only 3 items on the menu, everything has to be good, right? If you agree, you must try this place. I think I almost licked my fingers in public.

PRO: AMAZINGGGGG lobster roll. without a doubt, MY FAVORITE on this list!

CON: none, regarding the food… (check out my yelp review and see what I had to say about the service *shade*)

luke’s lobster

located right under the Brooklyn Bridge, I figured if the lobster roll at Luke’s Lobster sucked, I would head to shake shack, or grimaldi’s which is around the corner. But, when I saw the line to order, I knew I was in for a treat. I tried the TASTE OF MAINE, 3 half rolls (shrimp, lobster, and crab roll)

PRO: that buttery, crispy roll

CON: too much oregano (but not a big deal)

street food, from around the world… this place was calling my name. so many great options on the menu, so for one of my meal options I had the lobster roll.

PRO: the citrus mayo that I dipped every fry in before eating

CON: the lobster roll (*more shade*)

Please feel free to add to my list… who makes the BEST lobster roll in your area?!

Planning on killing the summer with all of these white numbers.  2 of 3 are already in the mail, and heading my way. You know I love white nail polish, so the thought of that white on white action makes me do a little dance in my head. I’m so excited.

Honestly, I’ll probably only wear the heels a few times, because the A train and 4″ heels ain’t hardly cute. But, I just have to have them.

oh yeah… i celebrated a birthday.

birthday cards from my loving friends & family

birthday’s have always been special to me. I remember growing up, and having parties. the entire family would come to my house, everyone would sing the “happy birthday” song and I would make a wish and blow out the candles. my parents would give me great gifts, and my siblings and cousins would hug me all day. It was always a great time. I’ve always looked forward to april 3rd, and 31 years later… ain’t shit changed!!

you ever have a weekend, where you have so much planned, and one thing changes, and the whole weekend is ruined? Well that’s how my weekend started off, but In the end I made the best of the situation.

The best part about my weekend was, running into Eddy and Andre’s, the delivery guys at a deli near my job.

Eddy & Andres... both drunk ass a skunk.

Another one bites the dust… CONGRATS future Mrs. Penny on  your upcoming wedding!

I rarely hang out in the city, let alone the Meatpacking District but here are a few tips to get you through the night:

  • PRE- GAME. PRE- GAME. PRE-GAME. drinks in the city are expensive for no reason.
  • DO NOT cross the rope before a bouncer grants you access. Seriously, you’ll be escorted off the premises.
  • BOTTLE SERVICE or NOTHING. It’s annoying being “General Admission” at the club. If you’re celebrating something special, cough up those extra coins and relax.
  • DON’T BE THE ANGRY BITCH. Listen, this is New York, it’s ALWAYS crowded. No need to get all defensive and rude because someone bumps into you or touches you. Leave New York if you don’t like people or can’t stand being touched by a random person. That’s life in this city.

keys to the new apartment

this past weekend, I’ve been trying to get my life together in my new apartment. My main issue is finding and creating storage. With only ONE closet in the entire apartment, I’ve been forced to entertain the idea of minimizing. My apartment is overflowing with vintage clothes, jewelry, make up, and hair care products. After working in the beauty industry for 7 years, I’ve accumulated enough product to open my own beauty supply store. It’s low key scary.

Maybe I’ll have a sidewalk sale when all signs of snow and chilling temperatures are gone.
