valentine’s day… are you focusing on bae?

does anyone else have a boyfriend who says dumb shit like, “… what are you getting me for Valentine’s Day” when discussing the holiday. *raises hand* I seriously hate how guys try and turn the one day dedicated to the special lady in their life, and make it about them. I’ve never researched the history of Valentine’s Day, mainly because I don’t care. I think it’s a fun day, where women should be celebrated for picking up their man’s dirty drawls all year long, washing their clothes, cooking and cleaning, rubbing vick’s vaporub on their chest when they’re crying bloody murder over a cold, and hyping them up when their beard is starting to grow in properly. don’t get me wrong, it’s not all about the gift, (that’s not my Love Language) a simple, ‘I love you’ and morning cuddle session is enough for me, but I think it’s weird when guys try to flip the situation. damn, can we have one day that celebrates US… or nah?

anyway, enough of my rant. continue reading if you’re the girlfriend who needs ideas on what to get your boyfriend for Valentine’s Day. guys don’t want flowers and candy, so step outside the box, and choose a gift bae will use and love. one thing for certain, i will NOT be in the checkout line with you though!

new year… “new YOU?”

ig post

I came across this post on Instagram the other day, and it literally spoke to me. I am normally a huge fan of the new year, and being a “better you,”  but for some reason, this new year hasn’t put any fire under my ass.

so, let’s just call February the start of the new year. I have a few goals set in place, which I did kick off in January, but in February, I plan to be 100% committed. check out a few of my goals listed below:

SAVING:

honestly, saving money has always been a struggle for me. I’ve never been taught  how to spend and save money wisely. I’ve always spent every coin I’ve earned. sometimes on items that are frivolous, and some items that last a lifetime. but, either way, as this old age creeps up, I’ve decided to get serious about my finances. so, I recently joined a savings challenge with my close friends with the help of financial educator, Tiffany Aliche. tiffany created the live richer challenge, and in 22 days, I’ve learned so many helpful tips that have changed my outlook on money and saving.

THE BLOG:

the blizoggg is on and poppin in 2016. I took a break the last few months of 2015, but I had so much going on. but I’m back, and will be dedicating more time and love to my blog, and readers. I appreciate the notes, and constant visits to the blog while I was away on vacation, and if it wasn’t for your kind words, I would have taken another month off. so, thank you, thank you, thank you for your encouragement, and continued support… 2016, LET’S GOOOOO!

HEALTH:

let’s go back, say… 3 years. With the exception of high school, that was the best, and happiest I’ve been with my body. not only was I happy with my body shape, but also my health and fitness overall. 3 years ago, I moved to NYC, started doing yoga 4 times a week, and was serious about my paleo lifestyle. somewhere along the line, i got hooked on cheeseburgers, empanadas, mac & cheese, crown royal, and everything in between. now that’s a hard habit to kick. so, I’m going back to what makes me happy, and ultimately what works. so, I signed up to YogaGlo, which offers online yoga classes. for the month of February, I will be joining the Fit Girls Challenge with my friends, join the challenge… it’s free!

I hope everyone is having an amazing New Year, remember to work hard for the goals you want to achieve. by the way, what are some goals you wish to achieve this year?!

herb fried chicken

I don’t fry chicken often…scratch that, I never fry chicken. It’s not because I don’t enjoy it (I do) it’s mainly because I’ve never been able to perfect it the way many of the women in my family have. I guess that’s setting quite a high standard since they’ve had so many years of practicing but I like to aim high in my endeavors. but when my friend Tisa requests fried chicken, fried chicken it is – she’s the only person I’d do this for; especially given the fact that I have a not so well-ventilated kitchen so I’m pretty sure the house smelled like chicken for days. oh well. In my version of fried chicken, I used chicken tenders primarily because it’s easy and most of the time I’m hungry when I’m cooking and have no time to waste. Enjoy!

for the brine:

chicken tenders (I used 8 tenders)

buttermilk

sriracha

for the chicken:

1 cup of flour

1 tsp salt (don’t be shy with the salt)

1 tsp. black pepper

1.5 tsp. herbs de Provence*

lemon zest

vegetable oil

*Herbs de Provence is an herb mixture that you should be able to find prepackaged in your local grocery store. It is typically a mixture of: marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano and lavender.

in a large bowl, add the chicken tenders then pour in buttermilk and a few dashes of sriracha. This is your brine for the chicken. if you can, allow the chicken to at least sit for 30 minutes longer if you can. for this recipe I did an hour and a half. if sriracha isn’t your thing, any hot sauce will do.

in a shallow dish, season with flour with salt, pepper, herbs de Provence and lemon zest.

heat a decent amount of vegetable oil in a skillet. to test and see if your oil is hot, stick the handle of a wooden spoon in the oil. if it bubbles, the oil is ready.

the fun part: one by one, remove each chicken tender from the brine, dip in the flour, dip back into the buttermilk then flour again. it seems a little extra but it gives the chicken a little extra crispiness and it makes all the difference.

fry your tenders (or whatever pieces of meat you’re using) until the outside is crispy and golden.

one year golden

this past month has been hectic. from moving, to traveling, apartment searching (in new york… the drama), bae searching for his dream job, crazy airbnb hosts, living out of a suitcase… I mean the list really goes on, and gets crazier. I’ve bounced back from all of the craziness, and I can truly say how grateful I am. no matter how many up’s and down’s I’ve had, this past month has taught me to live in the moment, oh, and don’t cry at work, not when you’re the happy, funny girl. It’ll freak everyone out.

In the true essence of living in the moment, I’ve blocked all the noise around me to celebrate…

THE GOLD CURVE TURNING 1 TODAY!

my OBSESSIONs are real… strolling through sephora and decided, I need a “pick me up.” so here are the products I purchased and love:

beauty blender cleanser SOLID: lately, I’ve been using johnson and johnson’s baby bath liquid soap to clean my beauty blenders, I’m all about the HACK chile. so, when I saw the beauty blender solid, I decided I’d give it a try.

solid huh, looks messy and not worth the money ($16). It’s actually easy to use, and not as messy as I thought. what I like most is how easy it makes traveling. less than 3 ounces, and no spills.

fresh LIFE: it’s no secret that FRESH products are something I’ll always spend money on. they’re light and “fresh.” Funny thing is after using this brand for years, I’ve never tried the classic FRESH scent. tried & true.

urban decay matte lipstick MENACE: i love urban decay but I have only tried their eye shadows, and primers. because I’m a lover of a dry lip (just kidding) I decided to try their matte lipstick brand… the best matte lipstick EVER. I have worn this lipstick for 10… yes 10 days straight. No dry, or cracked lips. this one is a winner, and shooting straight to the top of my must haves list.

loving my new beauty products… share your current obsessions below!

díner en blanc… philly

a 25 minute walk, all white. table on my back, chairs on cort’s arms. pulling a wagon filled with food. to a secret location. ohhh, and let’s not forget the scattered thunderstorms… on this day, this was the norm for over 4000 people.

a pop up dinner, at a secret location, where everyone is dressed in white. le díner en blanc is a 27 year old tradition, started in paris. in the beginning, this magical night used word of mouth only to gain attendees. today there are 30,000+ people on the wait list. today prospects rely on social media to find an “in” to this once a year chic picnic.

3 things that went WRONG on the day of díner en blanc;

we didn’t have enough wine

my experience:

at first glance, seeing pictures on social media of this event where hundreds of people are all dressed in white is beautiful. immediately, I wanted to attend the next event. but, what I didn’t know was the process. I’m still unsure of how to obtain tickets other than your name being drawn in a lottery. after the bff told me we had been chosen, i was so excited. until the next day, when we received an email from Tracy the “table leader” explaining how things work. after reading the email… the game changed. you have to bring everything… literally everything. a table, chairs, place setting, food, table props, champagne, wine. uhmm wtf? the bff estimated that we spent $500 on this night. “bish where?”

first, we met up with our group (table mates) and then walked to a surprise destination. so, for us, it was a 25 minute walk, in the rain, in 80 degree weather, plastic ponchos sticking to our skin, and sweating out our hair. but, when we strolled up to the navy yard, it all seemed worth the trouble.

thousands of people lugging tables and chairs, pile into the navy yard, and begin to setup their tables. out comes the tablecloths, fine china, candelabras, wine glasses, champagne flutes, fresh flowers… I mean the works. but remember, it’s still raining. I look around, everyone seems to be content with the rain. ok, then I’ll act like its a beautiful spring day too.

everyone begins to wave their white cloth napkins in the air, a sign that all tables are set up, and dinner can begin. but don’t forget… it’s STILL raining, and the bff realized she lost her phone, so she is O.V.E.R. it. however… the show must go on. pour a glass of wine and worry about it in the morning.

after the 2nd glass of wine is when we gave in to the rain. at that point the only problem I had with the rain was how it diluted my wine. so what, we have on white dresses and it’s pouring, so what, the rain and humidity turned our hair into afros. so whattttt, we ran around barefoot on wet grass and dirt. after we stopped complaining, and LIVED LIFE… we understood how magical díner en blanc is.

and then… the rain stopped!

how was díner en blanc in your city?!

xoxo… to the weekend

DOPE... the movie at BAM

DOPE… the movie at BAM

A must see… hilarious, true, and epic. Yes, I drank half a bottle of wine before attending, so I may have laughed a little harder and louder than usual, but this movie was greatness. The story of a 90’s music fan/ high school geek who gets caught up in local drug activity is genius. The events that took place in this movie, aren’t far from reality. Growing up in West Philadelphia, being bussed off to school everyday, many times carrying a violin case did not make me blind to what was going on in my neighborhood. So the storyline of DOPE, definitely hit a few soft spots for me.

meet Celeste from RedHook

I mean… how cool is this? celeste runs a lemonade stand on the corner of her block. and guess what all the money she makes goes towards… her college fund. I am an advocate for higher education, but the way college tuition is set up, I hope my children are 12 year old entrepreneurs like celeste.

GAY PRIDE… front seat view

my favorite day in NYC is GAY PRIDE. the main reason, because everyone is HAPPY. homophobes know to jet off to the Hamptons or wherever they go to hide, and the city comes alive. Everyone is laughing with one another, meeting new people, walking around topless, openly being affectionate, and I love every minute of it.

what is “astroglide?”

21st and 5th… ALL LOVE!

I hope everyone had an amazing weekend, filled with LOVE, FOOD, and GREAT FRIENDS!

BONUS

50 cent: in da club

back story about this song: the NBA All Star game was hosted in Atlanta, my freshmen year of college. just to let you know, that weekend, was one of the BEST weekends of my life. Around that time 50 cent was “the next big thing.” his hit song in da club could be heard anywhere there was a speaker, or stereo.

a bunch of my college friends (shout out to Pfeiffer Hall, second floor, east wing) headed to Lenox Mall to join in on the “ratchetness.” we arrived at Lenox, and maybe 45 minutes later, the mall was shut down. as we were leaving, we heard in da club blasting from a truck. about 10 of us started dancing, and rapping along, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC. shortly after a guy gets out of the truck, and signals for one of us to come to him. guess who it was? 50 cent. he invited all of us to the club with him that night. so we ran back to the dorm, and started getting ready. he called later to check in, and confirm we were coming. he then asked if we had cars. wanda’s response, “Hell naw we ain’t got no vehicles.” and that was the the end. NO transportation, NO party.

every time I think of that story, I smile from ear to ear. epic.

happy saturday everyone, enjoy this amazing weather, and amazing music!
