a 25 minute walk, all white. table on my back, chairs on cort’s arms. pulling a wagon filled with food. to a secret location. ohhh, and let’s not forget the scattered thunderstorms… on this day, this was the norm for over 4000 people.

a pop up dinner, at a secret location, where everyone is dressed in white. le díner en blanc is a 27 year old tradition, started in paris. in the beginning, this magical night used word of mouth only to gain attendees. today there are 30,000+ people on the wait list. today prospects rely on social media to find an “in” to this once a year chic picnic.

3 things that went WRONG on the day of díner en blanc;

scattered thunderstorms in philly

me and the bff forgot our plates at home

we didn’t have enough wine

my experience:

at first glance, seeing pictures on social media of this event where hundreds of people are all dressed in white is beautiful. immediately, I wanted to attend the next event. but, what I didn’t know was the process. I’m still unsure of how to obtain tickets other than your name being drawn in a lottery. after the bff told me we had been chosen, i was so excited. until the next day, when we received an email from Tracy the “table leader” explaining how things work. after reading the email… the game changed. you have to bring everything… literally everything. a table, chairs, place setting, food, table props, champagne, wine. uhmm wtf? the bff estimated that we spent $500 on this night. “bish where?”

first, we met up with our group (table mates) and then walked to a surprise destination. so, for us, it was a 25 minute walk, in the rain, in 80 degree weather, plastic ponchos sticking to our skin, and sweating out our hair. but, when we strolled up to the navy yard, it all seemed worth the trouble.

thousands of people lugging tables and chairs, pile into the navy yard, and begin to setup their tables. out comes the tablecloths, fine china, candelabras, wine glasses, champagne flutes, fresh flowers… I mean the works. but remember, it’s still raining. I look around, everyone seems to be content with the rain. ok, then I’ll act like its a beautiful spring day too.

everyone begins to wave their white cloth napkins in the air, a sign that all tables are set up, and dinner can begin. but don’t forget… it’s STILL raining, and the bff realized she lost her phone, so she is O.V.E.R. it. however… the show must go on. pour a glass of wine and worry about it in the morning.

after the 2nd glass of wine is when we gave in to the rain. at that point the only problem I had with the rain was how it diluted my wine. so what, we have on white dresses and it’s pouring, so what, the rain and humidity turned our hair into afros. so whattttt, we ran around barefoot on wet grass and dirt. after we stopped complaining, and LIVED LIFE… we understood how magical díner en blanc is.

and then… the rain stopped!

I really think I’m Lisa Bonét with this red hat. Actually it’s not the hat, been thinking that since my parents named me Tisa Monét.

I am my grandmother’s child. She loved this hat so much I basically ripped it out of her hands.

Why does Ira Mae have a hat from Urban Outfitters? Maybe because I purchased it as a gift for her a few years back. She had the nerve to “re- gift” it… TO ME.

vintage in december

When I think about growing up, and being a teenager, I remember HATING winter. Probably because I wasn’t into vintage fashion back then, who knows… oh, and because summers in Philly are pretty much epic. But today, I can say I appreciate the season. It’s just that time of year that makes me grateful to have/ had two great women in my life. My grandmother’s, the late great Amelia Virginia Wright, and the amazing Ira Mae Salter. Both taught me their personal definition of style and I am so thankful.

i wanna be down…

One of my best friends sent me “the song of the day,” and it took me all the way back. I was at work, volume turned up to the max, singing at the top of my lungs. In 1994 I lived for Brandy, and Monica. Of course I was team Monica, but there was no way you could deny Brandy was the ISH!!

I WANNA BE DOWN (REMIX) 1994

My Favorite lyrics from the song

“I ain’t afraid of the sweat but yet I bet you got the techniques to freak a girl inside out, what’s that all about” -MC Lyte

“You be that brother that I wanna sink my teeth in make me wanna ask where tha hell you been.” -MC Lyte

“Seems like you got a hold on me it must vodoo cause baby I want you.” -Yo Yo

“… and you gotta keep it strong for tha cause and you got to keep me strong for the toss.” -Queen Latifah

“No one else understands us but we you were the first to tame me uh Big Tif I’m out.” -Queen Latifah

I WANNA BE DOWN (REMIX) 2014- BET HIP HOP AWARDS

**There is something about Queen Latifah on stage rapping in 2014 that makes me smile on the inside. When I first saw the performance from the BET Hip Hop Awards, I wanted to jump through my computer screen, and show the audience the reaction they should have had.

First things first… this is not a food blog. I rarely cook, and for new and creative recipes, I’m probably the last person you should ask. But when my grandmother gave me her banana pudding recipe just in time for Thanksgiving, I had to share.

Now, this is REAL banana pudding…  I did not use JELL-O INSTANT PUDDING. The pudding used in this recipe, is made from scratch. Also, no CHESSMAN COOKIES were used either. Any cookie used for banana pudding other than a Nilla wafer is STUPID, and I want NO parts.

My grandmother is the sweetest person, but getting this recipe out of her “correctly” was hard. First, she gave me no exact measurements. Secondly, I know she left out her “Secret ingredient.” But either way… I was beyond happy with the end result. A few more times, and I will have Ira Mae’s Banana Pudding Recipe perfect!

i love you TINA TURNER.

Happy 75th Birthday to my IDOL, Tina Turner… the Queen of ROCK & SOUL! When I was 17 years old, I listened to Tina Turner’s debut album Private Dancer, and fell in love. Her strong voice with her Rock and Roll style surprised me. After reading her autobiography, and watching “What’s Love got to do with it” I became completely obsessed with her.

my FAVORITE TT quote, and my motto…

If you are unhappy with anything… whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.

Ira Mae Clark

IRA MAE CLARK, was born in 1929, to a single mother of three, and recently deceased father. To me she is one of God’s most precious creations. She has the heart of gold, and the most beautiful spirit of anyone I know.

Wrightsville, GA

Because I was interested in my family history, I asked my grandmother about her childhood, including her brothers, and father I never knew. She didn’t know much, mainly because her father passed shortly before she was born, and her mother relocated her and three siblings from a small town in Wrightsville Georgia, to Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

This made my imagination go wild. Just the idea of not knowing, and what could BE. I told my grandmother I would find the missing links to her family tree, and any other family she may have and not know about.

I know this will be a hard task due to the limited knowledge of her family tree. However, I am so excited to get any information I can, and share with my grandmother.

Follow along as I find IRA MAE CLARK.
